What is the difference in zoom on digital cameras... read down?

i JUST bought and olympus, I was told they were good but for focus it uses... iESP, Spot AF, Face Detection AF, AF Tracking.. it seems slow to me, it takes awhile to focus and canons have TTL autofocus... so i'm guessing that is better and faster? what is the difference?
